Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
Rom 16:22 I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord.
Perhaps someone can help me understand the relation between these two verses. What is "Tertius"? I checked the strongs and it says third, but I don't see how that fits so I must be missing something and I'm curious to find out. Any thoughts?..:-)

Some consider Tertius to have composed Romans in
accordance with Paul's instruction (Romans 16:22),
however it is more probable that Tertius was Paul's
secretary who either wrote the letter in long-hand from
Paul's dictation, or who first took Paul's letter in
shorthand and then wrote it out in long hand with
Paul's final approval.

From the new living bible:
Romans 16:22 22 I, Tertius, the one who is writing this letter for Paul, send my greetings, too, as a Christian brother.
Tertius is a person. Someone who served as a secretary to Paul in writing this epistle as it was dictated to him.

You're quite right. According to my Greek Lexicon, Tertius was a person, an amanuensis, one hired to write by dictation, or to copy manuscripts.
Since this is the only instance of this name appearing in the New Testament, I would guess that Tertius was a local hired by Paul and not likely someone that travelled with him.

Other epistles were also dictated by Paul and penned by others. I have long believed that the 'thorn' in Paul's flesh was a physical impairment ie very poor eyesight bordering on blindness. That is why he didn't write himself often, in fact makes specific mention of that in the following:
1Co 16:21 The salutation of me Paul with mine own hand.
Ga 6:11 Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.
2Th 3:17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.
Phm 1:19 I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.
