Hey all,

I've been studying my bible lately, and I keep coming across verses that state you should 'fear' god. We are supposed to have a warm, loving God. This is confusing, I'm pretty sure it isn't to be taken literally, I think it means that you just need to be aware and respectful of his unmatched power. If anybody has any scriptures and an explanation that could clarify this for me, I would appreciate it.

God bless you all,

Pro 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
Ecc 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Psa 34:9 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

Psa 115:13 He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.

Pro 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Pro 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Pro 10:27 The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

I could post so many scriptures that state to fear God. Yes they are to be taken literally. To not fear the Lord would be foolish. God's children do have a loving God; however, we also have a wrathful God that has commanded us to follow his law and turn from our wicked ways. Those who disobey God will find out why we fear God when their judged and condemned for eternity.

We should learn to love God more by having fear of him...i think what u said pretty much covers it. We need to fear him that we dont try to start telling him what he should and shouldnt do and that kinda thing.

God is like your dad when you were a kid, your dad was loving, kind, fun, and rewarding at times. But if you cross the line with him your going to be scared that your going to get punshied.

True and we should be scared...i think that a factor that helps us to draw closer to God and strive to be more like him is that we respect his authority and i think the word im looking for is yeilding to him in terms of meekness which is one of the 9 fruits of the spirit.
