hey everyone.
i'm wondering what ya'lls take on secular music is. do you all listen to it? do you think it is 100% wrong? what about secular music that does not use curse words or inapporiate lyrics, but it's not necessary worshipping God either. im in the habit of listening to the radio... thoughts/comments please. :-)

Howdy Emily. I do listen to some, but if it has any cussing or anything that I know I don't need to hear, then I don't listen to it. Things like.. Britney Spears.. and Eminem.. I think they are a waste of good time, but thats only my opinion. I wouldnt suggest listening to anything that you dont think would please God. Think about this... WHen you listen to a song.. and it ends, can you say Priase God that was a wonderful song..?

I listen to it sometimes too. There are some songs honestly that have a swear word but i don't even notice it at times. Think about how it makes you feel after you listen to the music. Does it just make you depressed? Music is supposed to uplift you.

hey,
I don't really listen to anything but christian because there is so much to choose from in christian music now that i don't really need anything else!

I don't touch any music made from 1950 and up. I dislike it :-). I disagree with much of the lyrics and find the music to be sinful in its self. There was a music thread a while back and Mr. Rufus had some nice thoughts on the topic of music. I reccomend you check it out :-) . The closest I go to listening to modern music is blue grass. Rachmaninoff is the latest composer I can sit and listen too... Bach, Handel, and many other oldies were strong christians who were faithful to God and made music to glorify God. I reccomend you listen to their music ;)

Sometimes it's hard to distinguish good music from bad music so I'll just put it this way: Does the music make you want to draw closer to God, or does it pull you away from Him? If it draws you away, stop listening to it right away!!
And don't just stop there, if it's a cd bust it in half and throw it in the garbage!!!!

I think some secular music can be just as uplifting as Christian music, there are certain artists who seek to uplift and inspire, music is the universal language. You can find truth and beauty in whatever inspires you!

I think some of the best artist are non-Christian, so I listen to a lot of non-christian music. As long as you do listen to some christian (to keep your thoughts on the right path) and you don't listen to bad music, I see nothing wrong with a few kelly clarkson of natasha benningfield songs.

or better yet, throw it into a furnace. Have it completely obliterated, allowing none of it to exist. There is good music, neutral music, and bad music. The good is to the glory of God. The bad draws us from God. The Neutral is just blah. Stand before God and pray. Ask Him which music you should listen to. If you feel any convictions about certain types of music, cease listening! I agree, SolidRock :-)

Ok, honestly, yes I think secular music is bad. I have convictions about most secular music...but I guess you could say I'm addicted because I still listen to it, even though I feel I shouldn't. Now, of course the stuff loaded with language, sex, drugs, alcohol...all of that isn't good at all. However, some secular music is alright I do suppose.

hope that helped a LITTLE ;-P

No, i don't think that listening to non-christian music is wrong, but i mainly listen to christian music- just cos the music i really like that's secular as well generally has some amount of swearing and stuff- or talks about death and suicide or whatever. But there's great secular music too- but, i'd agree with SolidRock. Listen to the music that keeps you near to God.

the problem with anything artistic is that the persons beliefs/unbeliefs are bound to come out in some way and some how and can sometimes be very subtle even if on the surface they seem neutral or even agree with Christian ideas. so you have to be on your gaurd all the time when you listen to this kind of music. I think the younger you are the harder it is (young age or a young Christian).

hayy iv just gone over this with my youth leader about 2 weekes ago and i belive he said that it dosent matter if it dosent have inapporiate lyrics and if it dosent have curse words in it its still not worshipping god and thats what you want to do right. so hears the thing i still listen to some countery music but i also pray that god will help me to overcome the want to listen to nonchristian music and help me to choose my music apporiateally so maybe take your questions to god through prayer and ask a youth leader

I think there is no problem with it. There are other artists that are awesome to listen to, that aren't neccessarily christian artists. But be careful what you listen to because it can invade your thoughts and later you actions.

I think it also depends where your mindset is. If your easily persuaded by other people(not to sound rude but if gulible)and if you believe other people to be 100% correct all the time, then i would suggest diving more into the bible and turn the radio off.
But if you don't think a song is gonna keep you out of heaven or crush your faith somehow then I think it is ok. See I believe nothing can keep me from God, because I stand on what He says in the bible.
John 10:28
And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.

Romans 8:35
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Romans 8:38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

But at the same time don't test God. To each is dealt an amount of faith. If you dont feel it is right THEN DON'T DO IT.

pray about it if it stumbles you

Maybe it does not stumble you but you might be stumbling someone else, turn it off if that person is in the room. It's called respect.

1 Corinthians 8:13
Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

Well, I don't listen to any secular music. Not because it's bad, but because I love Christian music. But to answer you're question, profanity, suggestive themes, if any of that stuff is in the secular music you listen to, then it's bad. As long as what you're listening to is clean, then it's fine, no worries. At least in my opinion, from what I've read in the Bible. Some might argue, however, that God created music to worship him, so you should only listen to Christian. Well, although that may be true, he also created us to worship him. That's life's most important purpose, to worship God. The second is probably evangelism, but my pastor hasn't gotten there yet. Anyway, though it might've been created to worship him, that doesn't mean he requires you use it to worship him. I don't know, just a thought. If you feel bad about listening to it, then the Holy Spirit might be telling you something, and in that case, He knows more about it then us, so listen to Him, I guess. Oh, and if you ever go 100% Christian, some great Christian artists are Jeremy Camp, Newsboys, Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin, and Michael W. Smith.

Hey,
I had a habit of listening to the radio for a while too. But it was kinda ruining my relationship with God. The last two days I have vowed to only listen to christian music and it's amazing how much closer I fell to God. Mainly the only non-christian music I listen to is Avril Lavigne, the all american rejects, and some of my favs from other bands. Example: ''Chasing Cars'' by the fray. But that's about it. I do not agree with all of Avril Lavigne's lerics, but i love her songs. I would try taking a day only listening to christian music if I were you:)
Love,

PinkCrazyKitty, "Chasing Cars" is sung by snow patrol. b:

I love Avril too. SOME of it. A tiny bit. Just like 2 songs, I think are okay. I love all american rejects. I dont like songs that are... you know, icky, so naturally I go to the other stuff, good stuff. I listen to the radio too, I dont listen to bad stuff though, Im super paranoid with what I listen to and let in the house.

you need to check out the lyrics, and the band history see what they are like. Pick a different radio station if you find there is too much of the wrong kind of music.

i think that as long as the music doesn't cause you to stumble that it's OK. i've been thinking about this a LOT lately (i just recently went through my iTunes and deleted everything that causes me to stumble) and i think that as long as you can listen to it without it causing your mind to go in a direction that's bad, then it's allright. if you're tempted to use swear words a lot or something, then i'd recommend NOT Listening to music with swear words in it!!!

I think its totally fine. You watch secular movies don't you????
Well I think if it doesn't have a bad message, or have cussing, sexual stuff, or anything against God or his word, it should be fine. It all depends, as my Mom told me, on your perspective. Say you listen to a song, and it talks about how beautiful love between a man and woman is....I think, that God loves that. It's because God created these things like love and many other things that secular music promotes. When I listen to songs about love or things like nature or sadness or things like that...I thank God for making all those things that we can appreciate and enjoy.

Depends what the words are in the song and what band. Some radio stations do not put on songs with swear words in them.

I think as long there are no curse words or innapropriate lyrics, it is okay. As long as you listen to worship music too.

I just tend to like a certain genre, and listen to the music in it regardless of whether it's Christian or not. I like mostly pop-punk, bands like Fall Out Boy, Reliant K, etc.

well
i would say it isn't really good to listen to secular music all the time because you don't really get anything out of it
if it has any bad words or talks about sexual things then that is 100 percent no way

I think it's okay. I listen to secular music. And sure as long as it doesn't curse or have dirty lyrics I think it's fine to listen to it.
