View Full Version : Reading the Bible
Hey all, I was wondering if some of you could advise me in where I should begin with my Bible reading. I skimmed through a modern-day english bible a few years back, but I really didn't get as much out of it as I should have. Should I begin with the New or Old Testament? I am thinking New because it seems more relevant to our modern lives. If anybody could pass on any wisdom to me and help me plan out my studies, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

The best place to begin in any book is the begining......;)

It has always helped me to go through a devotional book. Sometimes, they also give you insights as to what the hidden meanings may be. Also, I read out of the NIV. King James is too difficult for me to understand and the Contemporary English version seems to skip over some important parts.
Happy Reading!

Hello Pahs, Reading the Old Testament first will greatly help you understand the New Testament better. You could read John in the New Testament for a quick "introduction" into the Gospel. Whether you start with the old or new, always pray before reading and ask God to grant you understanding of his word. After all, only the Holy Spirit can apply the word to your heart. If you have any questions or don't understand a verse, you may be able to look into another part of the bible to help you see what the meaning is; however, you may have times when you can not find the answer and you can always post here on the board. I'm sure someone will be glad to help you out. Whatever someone else tells you though, always check that against the scriptures. Below I have posted some scriptures for you to read from the KJV and I very strongly recommend the King James Version bible. You could also download the esword.com online for the strongs tools which will help you better understand the meanings of words. Were all here with you for the ultimate search for truth. May God richly bless you!
Pro 28:9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law(God's word), even his prayer shall be abomination.
2Ti 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Pro 2:6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
Pro 3:9 Honor the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
Pro 3:11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
Pro 3:12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
Pro 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
Pro 3:14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

Well pahs, I would start reading a proverb a day. It is always good to read the 1st 4 books of the new testament, to read of Jesus' wonderuos works. If you are interested in wars, there are plenty of them in the old testament, with many messages represented. Many of the psalms are good. The first 5 books, will show you the laws of the bible. I, personally, am a major history lover, so I love reading all the acts people did, so I believe some books like samuels and kings, should be read. Paul is a very good author and it would be very good to read his works. (all the books from Romans to Titus). All the books of the bible are good and all should be read, I was just giving you starting places. Try ephesians, that is one of my favorite books. Have a great one.

Something that I find helpful is buying some bible notes. I use YP's they are a day by day bible reading program. They tell you which verses to read and then they relate it back to today's world and how it could relate to you.
Even though you are in America I still think there will be a simlilar thing on sale over there. This is what I use: http://www.ypsonline.org.uk/

Start where you think you should. A lot of people start with the New Testament, I myself started with the old; it doesn’t really matter. Just pray about it, and pray for the understanding of what you do read, that God will show you what He wants you to see.
