Genesis 1 verse 26

Then God said "Let Us make man in Our image according to Our likeness;.........

This is what the verse says in my bible. I haven't checked but I take it it is the same in other bibles.

Who is God talking about when He says "Let Us make" and "in Our image" and "Our likeness". In other texts like verse 27 it says God created man in His image not Our. Just curious as to what some might think. I have my own theory. :)

This would be a good question to ask and I'm sure this would be a good test too. ^^


I'm pretty sure that when God used the words "Us" and "Our" to indicate that there existed the Three Divine Persons. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost exist together in One God and therefore would be indicated with the plural forms. This can also be used to point out that all Three Divine Persons existed before the world was created including the Son, Jesus Christ.


Anyway, that is my personal thought. I'm interested to hear your theory.

God is saying that because he created us in his image. He wanted us to look like him. Have faith in the verse Genisis 1:26.

Hello fellow Aussie!! :) Yes Grizzly, my faith is rock solid, but that verse I mentioned says "Us and Ours" which indicated that God had someone else beside Him. As I am looking at the bible with fresh eyes, as I read verses today, I want to make sure that my mind comprehends everything as much as possible in the correct way. I am pretty sure in my mind what the verse means but would like others to comment on their beliefs for this verse please just to confirm what I am thinking. :-)

Well you got it Angel just as John the beloved did get it! He confirmed Genesis 1:26 with THESE WORDS in John 1:1-2:

In the beginning was the Word (Jesus Christ), and the Word was with God (Father and Holy Spirit Gen 1:2 "the Spirit of God was moving..."), and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God."

Jesus Christ was in the beginning with the Father and the Holy Spirit. They were all together in creation thus "Let US make man in OUR image and in OUR likeness". The image and likeness is the spiritual being (breath from God, breath of life) of man and the physical being is formed from the dust of the ground.

In the old days kings referred to themselves as WE OUR etc. It was common practice. What greater king is then then God?

In Gen 1:26, God is talking about Himself as the Blessed Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Three persons in One Godhead).

Angel, I think I have an idea what you are driving at :-) . If I am right, I am for it too! :) Yes, we are made in the image and likeness of God. When Adam ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, God said "man had become like Us." Therefore the scriptures says, "you are gods..." and we are called "christians" (translated "little" christ or messiah). Many have also become proud or arrogant of this revelation without considering the RESPONSIBILITY one has to take to be called CHILDREN OF GOD. More comment will be posted on this after your reaction, sister. :-D

No German Joy, I don't quite understand that last idea you had but the one before that you posted about Jesus and the Holy Spirit being with God at the beginning is more what I had thought the passage meant. :) It is interesting though! ;)

The Word of God always answers itself ! When God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: He was speaking to His Wisdom. In Gods "own image" there is wisdom. And when God created man, He created him with wisdom. ( or to have wisdom)
*Read Proverbs chapter 8 *

When God created man they were created to know ONLY GOOD. But when they ate of the tree of good and evil their eyes were open and they became as God with His wisdom to know the difference between good and evil.
Luke 11-49>Therefore also said THE WISDOM OF GOD, I will send them prophets and apostled, and some of them they shall slay and persecute.

This does not make TWO gods !
God Has MANY ATTRIBUTES ! BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE SPIRIT !
GOD IS NOT DIVIDED INTO THREE PARTS !
If a person can't understand that GOD is ONE ...they are either, spiritually blind, do not have the Holy Ghost, dont want to see it, don't care, or God hasnt given them the revelation.
