Hi everybody!

So here's a question for you. As we all know, in "Churchworld" we have our own Christian terms that a lot of the time we don't know how to define. Or, maybe we do have a definition, but it is not a full or accurate one.

I am working on one of my talks for a group that I work with, and I'm wondering how you would define "sin". Basically, "What is sin?"

Your help is much appreciated!

Sin is anything that prevents you or someone else from attaining mental, physical or spiritual growth. God wants us to grow as individuals and also doesn't want us to hurt the growth of others. Sin is a funny little word used to discribe something bad in Gods eyes. The Bible is many thing, most importantly it's a guidebook that gives rules to help us grow healthy and strong mentally, spiritually and physically.

Hi.
have you had a look at the Catechisms?
from the Westmminister larger catechism, or confession of faith,

Question 24: What is sin?
Answer: Sin is any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, any law of God, given as a rule to the reasonable creature.

http://www.spurgeon.org/~phil//creeds.htm
you can boil that down to things we should do and do not, and things we do we should not.

God gave His laws and all God's laws express a single fact We are Loved!

The Bible says what father fails to disciipline and correct his child?
If the parent loves the child the child will be taught right from wrong. "I love you. Don't do that because I don't want you to be hurt."
and "I love you. Do this and be blessed and enjoy it."

All of what God says is one or the other kind of love for His children.

God created Adam in His own image. We are created to be the image bearers of God.
dam and Eve sinned.
Sin seperates us from God. he can not look on it.
Sin is rooted in pride alone, and that pride causes us to repeatedly put ourselves and other and other things ahead of anf above God in our hearts, minds and lives.
We make the creation an idol. We curse God and creation by Hs own name, we disregard His sabbath and sleep in, go shopping, do chores, and in general distract ourselves from Him who created and has provided all things.
Sin seperates us from our father creator. It also means that in that seperation we may NOT enter the Kingdom of heaven.

The only way to enter heaven is to not sin.
read Psalm 51.
We can't do it.
But God can do all things, but something he can not do is die.
So He came to us in the person of the Son, Jesus, who was called Immanuel, Son of God, Savior, Christ messiah. (see Isaiah 8,9 53) and e paid with His own blood the penalty for sinning against Him.
he paid in His blood what we owed for our sin against God.

when you were a little kid did anyone ever offer to take your spanking for you?

Suppose a couple of kids are walking home from school.
One beats the other up, steals his jacket and all his money and leaves him bleading on the sidewalk.

Later the bully kid gets caught and his daddy is gonna give him a sound whoppin'!.
But just as punishment is about to be administered, someone comes in and says "I will take his punishment for him. I will take his stripes."
And the bully turns to see his savior and it is the kid he beat up.

he takes the punishment and the dad lets the bully go saying, "The demands of the law have been satisfied in your friends sacrifice of Himself for your sake."

I know all you asked was a simple question "What is sin?"
"Bad stuff we do" is the answer.
Why should we NOT sin is a better question, because the answer is that we should not sin but be holy as God is holy in order to present ourselves to Him spotless and blameless.

We can not take back our sin or make ourselves clean of it.
But as Psalm 51 says He can wash us witer than snow.

We repent, tirn from it to Jesus... and why would we want to do that?
We love Him because He first loved us.
When some one has paid the ultimate price for your sake, the knowedge f it has an impact, strong and deep.
The reactions are always the same choices and there are obly two.
Aceptance or rejection.
It is the relationship we have that bends our hearts to grieve if we have grieved our Father. Our hearts should break at the thought of causing Him pain.

Sin cause our Heavenly Father to grieve.

Hope this will help

John 14:15 If you love Me, keep My commandments.

John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

Luke 11:28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

1John.2 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

1John.5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Revelation 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Proverbs 8:36
But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:56
The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

1 John 5:17
All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

I think that sin is anything we do that goes against the word of God.

Sin is I will instead of God willing.

The first thing that comes to my mind, is sin is anything that does not glorify God. When we are even doing simple everyday things that don't seem to be directed to God, as long as what we are doing does not go against the Bible and our role model Jesus Christ we are glorifying God. Our lives can either glorify God or not, everytime it's not I believe that is when we sin.

Sin is any verbal or physical act that violates the will of God. Before we have a relationship with Jesus, that built-in inner voice from God that we call our conscience speaks to us through our hearts. Hopefully, after we have begun a relationship with Jesus, we turn to The Word of God for knowledge of Him and guidance in spiritual growth.

All unrightousness is sin.
It is a sin to disobey the Lord in any form or fashion.

I have read all of the posts and all have the same theme, acts of sin. What people are answering as "sin" are better phrased as "sins or a sin" While correct in their definitions, sin is not the manifestation of "SIN"

SIN is the endwelling nature that a natural man has. It is who he is, he is a sinner, why because he is SIN, "it's his nature". The out ward breaking of laws and commandments are termed sins, but sre not "SIN". Scripture makes a distinction between the two. While sins like adultery, murder, etc will effect fellowship, it is SIN ( a nature we were all born with) that actually seperates us from God, and is what Jesus died to pay the price of.

humanly we say because a man committed a murder he is a murderer, God states a man is a sinner (murderer,adulterer,etc...) thats why he commits a murder.

Your Identity comes not from what you do rather who you are. (your birthright)
Man is a sinner so he commits sinful act
NOT that man commits a sinful act he is deemed a sinner.

In HIM
