I've heard people say:
1. committing suicide
2. blasphamy of the Holy Spirit (what does this mean?)
3. cursing using God's name in vain
4. not accepting Christ died for our sins and is our salvation
5. and just recently - attributing the acts of the Holy Spirit to Satan instead
Does anyone know what this means for sure?
Thanks

Blaspheme of the Holy Ghost - "But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:" Mark 3:29 KJV. But as to what it means for sure - sorry, do not know. Asked a few people myself, best answer was "if you still are asking if you have done it, your okay". Know that isn't much help, but gives you one answer. There are so many questions that we all have and will not receive answers to until we are in that heavenly home. God bless you and yours.

The only unforgivable sin that the bible speaks of is in mark 3:29 " but he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness but is guilty of an eternal sin" and in Mat 12:31 "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven men.
Mat 12:32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, neither in this age, nor in that which is to come."
CoolJ it seems pretty self explanitory. All sin can be forgiven except...and it gives a definition of what it means to blasphamy the Holy Spirit, to speak against Him. I would say your #5 would be included in that.

thanks for the info - so 'speaking against' the Holy Spirit is blaspheme which is this type of sin, like in the bible where the scribes were saying Jesus was casting out evil spirits by the power of satan instead of by the power of the Holy Spirit.
I don't know why anyone saved would ever say something like that, and I don't think I have, so I'm in the clear!! :-)
The only thing that I might have come close with are the following (I hope none of these count!!):
A bible study I went to, people would fall down during praise, they were being 'slain in the spirit'. I had thought once - what if this is the devil trying to disrupt things - I definitely didn't understand it. Though I never said to anyone 'what if this is the work of satan', now I'm glad I didn't!
But sometimes I see these miracles done on TV that 'seem' fake.
I also remember my dad telling me about meeting this woman known for having a miracle of gold dust would fall from her hair all the time! I wanted to laugh, but if these are truely blessed people who perform miracle by the power of the holy spirit, I probably should just not say anything rather than talk about how I think they are fake! They'll have to answer to God one day if they are not real anyway.
Also, I have a friend who is saved but believes that people should be speaking in tongues anymore. I don't think he has told me he thinks it is from the devil, I hope he never does because I believe speaking in tongues is still ok and from the Holy Spirit- though I've never personally done it.

blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is really all of these things
Shalom, God Is Holy. Based on the already mentioned verses in Mark and Matthew, I believe Jesus Himself is telling us that ONLY the speaking evil of the Holy Spirit and NOT against the Son of Man (Jesus Christ) is the UNPARDONABLE sin. So in this case only Nos. 2 and 5 are the correct answers.
What is and why unpardonable? First, unpardonable means cannot or can never be forgiven. Second, it is unpardonable because there is no room for repentance. While the sin against Jesus (Son of God and/or Son of Man) is forgiven IF REPENTED, the sin agaiinst the Holy Spirit (Spirit of God) is not.
I have noticed that those who are fixed to the idea or belief that a fellow christian is led by the evil spirit and not the Holy Spirit could not changed their minds and attitudes about the said brethren. I say this from my again own personal experience of brethren who believed and claimed that I was controlled by the evil spirit when the Holy Spirit miraculously healed a sick-dying "saved" old man when I laid my hands upon him. Sadly, that has been a long time ago until now they are still convinced of it. My reaction? I am a human being, I forgave them. :-)
God bless.

No, it is not all those things. It is not even #2. This verse is very specific, in Matthew 3:28-30. Verse 30 gives the definition "for they had said, "He has an unclean spirit."" They were attributing the works of the Holy Spirt through Jesus unto Satan. And no, I don't think a true Christian can commit that sin.
We are new creatures and have the Spirit living in us.

Hi CoolJ,
You are absolutely right to say that anyone "saved" cannot normally commit the sin of "speaking against the Holy Spirit". But how come there are many doing this? Honestly speaking, I do not have an answer for it. But since Jesus warned us in Mark 3:29, we have no excuse not to know it. Therefore we are instructed not to be judgmental but wait until the Lord comes who will reveal the motives of men.
From my own experience, most "christians" commiting this sin are those who are very knowledgeable of the bible reminding me of the scribes and pharisees who were also experts of the law of God. The bible says, 'knowledge makes arrogant but love edifies'.
If we all learn to love one another (despite of indifferences) in the same way Jesus loves us, we will be free from the danger of falling into this sin.
Love is not arrogant, love is kind...
God bless.

Suicide as many believe, is not I think the Unpardonable sin. If someone who is in a dire state of depression decides to swallow a bottle of pills and perhaps they were heavely controlled by demonic forces and were just plain out depressed and then afterward realized that they did not want to die but it was already to late... I think the Good Lord would be willing to forgive that person... I KNOW HE WOULD... He is not willing that any should perish... But Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is when you completely ignore all light that has been given to you and you continually push away the Holy Spirit until the day comes where you have made a solid decesions to purposely and completely have nothing to do with the Holy Spirit... weather you realize it or not. Remember this is not the work of God but of the person themself. The Holy Spirit keeps knocking at your door and you keep telling him to go away... then He knocks again and you nail boards over the door.... then He knocks again and you push your refrigerator in front of the door and you continue to block Him out over and over... That is Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit because for those people there is nothing left that God can do. That is the unpardonable sin.

P.S. and you wouldnt even be wanting to know about God if you had already committed the Unpadonable Sin. Because you wouldnt care... it would not be an issue for you. So if your on this board... dont worry your in the clear.

Blasphemy is cursing and using Gods name in vain....the word vain means to make seem meaningless so if u make Gods name seem like it has no meaning at all like possibly saying the devil did something only God can do then thats blasphemy...so its a combination of the 2,4 and 5th thing u said...

I don't think we should be so afraid of accidently blaspheming the Holy Spirit to the point that we throw out discernment of spirits. Questioning whether people are really manifesting the Holy Spirit or whether they are caught up in something else, is not the same thing as blaspheming the Holy Spirit. We do need to be on our guard against 'miracles' that originate from demons, or that are con artists tricks to deceive believers.
Questioning whether a person really has gold dust falling from their hair is perfectly legitimate and, I think to not question it would be dangerous. What purpose could gold dust falling from hair really serve? Does that match up with the Bible and sound doctrine? These are questions we are supposed to ask. Questioning whether a person is really manifesting gifts of the Spirit or whether the person is faking it, is not wrong. In those cases we are doubting the person, not the Holy Spirit. I believe that the Holy Spirit does work through people and many of the gifts are real. I also believe that people can fake it and that faking it is wrong. We need to be on our guard lest we be deceived into believing false doctrine.
"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." 1 John 4:1.

What sends people to hell? Commiting suicide? No.
What sends people to hell is not believing in Jesus Christ and asking Him to take away their sins and to become their Savior and dwell within them. THAT is the unforgiveable sin.

Speaking in tongues is not a bad thing...its simply speaking in a langauge that we dont understand but God does...as i have most recently got on fire for God i constantly catch myself speaking in tongues and i remember that the disciples spoke in tongues and Jesus was not displeased with them because of it so why should i worry that i speak in tongues too?I believe that anyone that has been filled with the Holy Spirit speaks in tongues but some to more of a recognizable state than others.

The bible says that no sin is unforgiveable except for not believing in Christ and not asking for forgiveness of all the sins on earth!

I don't think that is possible anymore. It's when Caiaphas and his followers stood face to face with Jesus and denied who He was and told Him that He had an evil spirit. Then after speaking by the Spirit plainly telling them who He was, the high priest ripped his garment and screamed blasphemy. That my friend is the blasphemy of the spirit. It was that generation that was blinded and judged in A.D. 70 (the destruction of Jerusalem) Matt. 24

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the same as rejecting the Holy Spirit. That is the only unforgiveable sin. All other sins can be forgiven, but we are not to continue in our sins. We should strive each day to be close to the Holy Spirit and ask for forgiveness every day.

I don't think it's rejecting the Holy Spirit today. (please refer to my earlier post)
Man doesn't have the choice to choose in the first place.
Paul says in Romans 8:7-8 "For the mind set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to Gods Law; indeed it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God"
If man being in the flesh (dead in his trespasses) can choose God, then you would have to conclude that he could please God by this decision. Which in return would prove Paul wrong.
I might also add that Paul also states in 1 Corinthians 2:14 "The natural person (in the flesh) does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned."
If man in his fallen nature can accept the Holy Spirit of his own doing, then Paul is greatly mistaken once again.
Paul also says that faith is a gift of God not a result in works.
Then comes the obvious Romans 9 on the whole election process but is beautifully concluded with this, 9:16 "So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.
I thank my God that we do not have the choice to mess up our eternal salvation. I trust that He is the author of our salvation...not man.
Lord bless you.

So, if you're saying that somebody says something like, "Oh, my god"... that's blasphemy, and they're going to hell? I'm sure that we've all said that at one time or another, whether we meant to or not. Surely that's not going to cause us to go to hell.
